Top 20 Tree Surgeons, Arborists & Tree Specialists in London

Before you stump up cash for a tree specialist, you will want to peruse our list of 20 of London’s best tree surgeons.

Our top 20 features a host of top-rated tree surgeons, affordable arborists, and go-to greenery experts.

Not only do the companies on our list have all the right qualifications and many years of experience, but most are also proud members of prestigious professional bodies and all are covered by comprehensive business insurance, too.

Finally, we know that a tree surgeon often must wear many hats: from coppicer and tree feller to disease diagnostician and landscaper.

That’s why we’ve sought out arborists with eclectic skill sets and the best equipment in the business, which allows them to tackle any tree-based job you can throw at them.

    Table of Contents

What are the Main Tree Services?

    • Cutting and pruning: A tree ‘haircut’, where the branches and foliage are cut back and pruned to reduce the tree height and keep its foliage healthy and aesthetically pleasing.
    • Straight felling: Involves the removal of the whole tree in one piece. The tree stump is typically left in the ground. The tree surgeon will consider the tree’s surroundings and neighbouring obstacles before undertaking a straight felling.
    • Section tree felling: Like straight felling but the tree is taken down in sections; this procedure is considered a safer bet when it comes to removing trees in confined spaces, especially where the tree abuts buildings and structures. The tree surgeon will use advanced rigging techniques to carry out a section felling.
    • Pollarding: Involves the removal of the upper branches of a tree to promote a dense head of foliage and branches.
    • Coppicing: The tree is cut down to a stump-like base (stool). The tree doesn’t die and will eventually produce multiple new shoots from the roots. The harvested wood can be used for fuel.
    • Stump grinding: If a tree has been removed, a stump is typically left in the ground. This can be reduced to ground level with a grinding tool to prevent regrowth and allow for replanting or landscaping in the area where the tree has been felled. Eliminating tree stumps also prevents sucker growth and fungal issues.
    • Crown reductions and shaping: Reduces the size of the tree’s canopy and shapes it to improve the tree’s aesthetics and structural integrity.
    • Hedge trimming: Regular maintenance of hedges is just as important as dealing with trees. Regular trimming ensures they stay in good shape and remain healthy.
    • Ivy Removal: Ivy can be a problem plant if it gets out of hand – it can impact the health of neighbouring trees and damage structures to which it attaches if left untamed and untreated.

Top 10 Tips When Employing an Arborist

    1. Look for members of the Arboricultural Association (AA) so you know its employees have undergone the latest training and have the right qualifications.
    2. Look for a tree surgeon who is a registered tree carrier so you can be sure they will remove the waste once the work is done.
    3. Ensure your tree surgeon adheres to British Standards 3998, so you know when it comes to tree surgery, safety and UK environmental standards.
    4. Look for members of the Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) if your trees are located in one of London’s forested areas.
    5. Opt for tree surgeons with Lantra training so you can be sure your tree surgeon possesses up-to-date arboriculture training and is adept at chainsawing, tree climbing, and tree felling.
    6. Get a full written quote so you can ensure all costs, including labour, equipment, and waste disposal, are outlined in writing before work begins and you can avoid nasty surprises.
    7. Beware of Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). These are administrated by a local planning authority (LPA) to preserve important trees, and it’s a criminal offence to interfere with trees without consent.
    8. Always ask to see public liability insurance to ensure that any tree surgeon that you employ has both public liability insurance and employer’s liability insurance.
    9. Find a tree surgeon who prioritises safety. Between 2002/03 and 2010/11, there were a reported 27 fatal injuries in the arboriculture sector in the UK. Over the same period, 516 non-fatal major injuries and 855 over-three-day injuries were reported.
    10. Look for NPTC-qualified tree surgeons, especially the following qualifications: 1, CS30.2, CS31, CS39 and CS38 (these cover tree climbing, wielding a chainsaw correctly and aerial rescue).

    Final Thoughts

Finding a qualified tree surgeon who meets all your criteria can be tricky.

Anyone with a chainsaw and some rigging can call himself an arborist, but the ones on our list have the bona fides and experience to show they are the best in the business.

Not only do they have the know-how that allows them to tackle trees but they understand the law and local government regulations that can be a minefield for the uninitiated.
