Dental implants can revolutionise treatment for mass tooth loss and bring real, tangible benefits for the patient, both in terms of their bite and their self-confidence.
But not everyone considers dental implants because they can seem a complex solution and often, raise a lot of questions and concerns, which should be addressed before visiting an implant clinic.
The most common of these dental implant questions are explored below to provide expert advice in collaboration with Marylebone Implant Centre.
1. How do Dental Implants work?
Dental implants are commonly made up of a two or three-part structure, including:
- A dental crown or prosthesis
- An abutment
- The dental implant
That follows and mimics a similar structure to that of a natural tooth.
The dental implant screw is normally made of a biocompatible material like titanium, and it is implanted into the jawbone, like the roots of a tooth.
Then, if you are fitted with a three-part implant, a separate abutment is added on top, which recreates the neck of the tooth.
If you have a two-part structure, the dental implant and abutment may be one piece.
Finally, a dental crown or prosthesis (which restores multiple crowns in one arch-shaped piece) is added, which allows patients to chew, smile, and communicate confidently.
2. Are Dental Implants painful?
Thanks to local anaesthetics, you shouldn’t experience any discomfort during the dental implant procedure.
However, as with all invasive procedures, you should prepare for some minor tenderness during the healing process, which is to be expected.
You should be able to easily control any aching with over-the-counter relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, and rest – with complete subsidence occurring within a few days or a week.
3. Can Dental Implants fall out?
Because dental implants are secured into the jaw, the dental implants can’t fall out, unless you have:
- Substandard dental implant treatment
- Severe infection
- Gum disease has caused weakening in the gums and bone
If fitted correctly by qualified, experienced dentists and your dental hygiene is maintained, you shouldn’t have any fears about your dental implants falling out.
4. Can Dental Implants be done in one Day?
Depending on the type of dental implants you choose and your unique dental circumstances, it is possible to receive dental implants in a single session.
These dental implants are commonly referred to as ‘smile in a day’ or ‘same day smile’ implants, but before you book your treatment, you should always check to ensure that your treatment timeline involves only a single day.
5. Can I get Dental Implants on the NHS?
Unfortunately, unless you have truly exceptional circumstances (as defined by the NHS themselves) you are unlikely to be able to get dental implants on the NHS.
This is because dental implants are considered an expensive solution and, as such, cheaper alternatives, such as bridges or dentures, are usually offered instead.
This means that most patients will go private to get dental implants.
6. Can I afford Dental Implants?
As they are not currently available on the NHS for everyone who needs them, most patients will pay for their dental implants, using either:
- A personal loan
- Dental implant finance
- Pay-monthly payment plans
- Saved funds
Be sure to discuss payment methods when you visit a provider to discuss dental implants in London – you might be surprised at the options that are available to you.
