In bygone days, the only machines you were likely to find in a traditional London boozer were the ones vending cigarettes and maybe an old-school fruit machine.
Today, things are a little different. The rise of competitive bar games has meant many pubs are fit to burst with machines and technology that make for nights packed with good times and friendly competition.
Our list features twelve venues in and around London at the forefront of this movement in competitive socialising.
Some offer a twist on classic British bar games – you can’t go wrong with barroom staples such as darts and pool – but we also have some off-the-wall bar-based activities you won’t find anywhere else (axe throwing or clay pigeon shooting, anyone?)
And we haven’t forgotten that at the heart of the pub experience is the food and drink.
So, we’ve gone for boozers, bars and event spaces where you’ll find free-flowing beer, copious cocktails and some of the finest cuisine and bar snacks anywhere in the capital.
Ready to get your game on? Then, let’s begin.
NB: Our list is ordered by Google rating and number of reviews.
1. Boom Battle Bar, Oxford Street (★ 4.8 | 3,600+ Reviews)
View this post on Instagram
Perhaps the best way to describe the games at this top-rated bar in Oxford Street is cutting-edge – literally so in one case.
You can play updated versions of many common pub games here, including augmented reality darts and digital beer pong.
But for an unforgettable bar game experience, you’ve simply gotta try the augmented-reality axe-throwing machines, where you and your pals battle it out to find out who has the best hatchet-heaving technique.
The bar’s games might involve an element of virtual reality, but the bar’s bottomless brunch is certainly the real deal.
It features an hour and a half of endless booze, sumptuous street food and a complimentary round of Crazier Golf.

Based in the O2 Arena, this is the world’s first interactive sports-themed venue.
It boasts five fully immersive football-based games, each aimed at players with different ball-playing skills.
For more seasoned ballers, there are games such as Atom Splitter and Zombie Attack, where you rack up points by using your football skills to split atoms and slay killer zombies.
Novice players can try their hand (or foot) at Striker, a beginner-friendly game where you only must hit the screen to score a point.
After the football, you should sample the venue’s first-class international food menu, which features American hot dogs, South American nachos and Asian dumplings.
Its killer cocktail list contains concoctions with delightfully punny soccer-related names, including its uber-popular Wred Card.

3. Flight Club, Bloomsbury – (★ 4.5 | 1,600+ Reviews)

As you might have guessed from the punningly titled name this bar uses, this place is all about darts – or social darts, as it’s known.
The venue’s aesthetic can best be described as a Victorian fairground – along with banks of dartboards, it also sports a rocking horse ride and a stunning carousel bar that gives the place its 19th-century funfair vibe.
Social darts is like regular darts, but less intense and more fun and is accompanied by digital screens and scoring.
The darts-based games here feature titles such as Demolition, a darts version of the game Battleships, and Shanghai, where you score as high as possible in a single round by hitting the same number on each throw.
As far as food is concerned, the bar’s signature burger is a firm favourite among regulars. And be sure to visit during Margarita Month, when patrons can quaff five exclusive margaritas.

View this post on Instagram
This iconic bar under the famous arches in Bermondsey hosts some of the most competitive shuffleboard competitions you’ll find in the capital.
For the uninitiated, shuffleboard is a fairly recent introduction to London’s gaming scene from across the Pond.
It’s a mix of curling, bar skittles and bowls and requires players to slide their pucks into a scoring zone at the bottom of a long table.
The bar has ten shuffle tables in total, and there is room around the tables for up to 16 friends.
The scoring is all automated, and an action replay system is ready to capture your memorable shuffleboard shots and replay them across the venue’s screens for everyone to see.
Thanks to the bar’s push-for-service button, you never need to leave your seat to order drinks – its signature margaritas, espresso martinis, and frozen slushies are all customer favourites.
The food menu features cheesy pizzas, burgers, and small plates.

Activity Bars: What’s Next?
The gamification of London’s socialising scene continues apace.
Driven by younger socialisers who are not as keen on boozing and dancing as previous generations, competitive gaming is aimed squarely at party people who want to socialise but stay sober-ish.
The newest addition, Roxy Ball Room, is set to open in spring 2025 at St Mary Axe, opposite the famous Gherkin skyscraper.
It will offer many of the bar games and activities featured on our list and a few we haven’t mentioned – basketball and ice-free curling will make their London bow when the bat opens its doors in the coming months.
