Top 10 Places for Sunday Lunch in London

London has some super eateries serving up Sunday roasted dishes accompanied by obligatory Yorkshire puddings and all the fixings.

Our list contains ten of the best of them with some in central London and some in Greater London.

We have all the bases covered, including the recently launched Potato Time from Britain’s answer to Willy Wonka – Heston Blumenthal.

The dining experience is hosted at one of the most luxurious London hotels, the Mandarin Hotel in Knightsbridge, and, as the name suggests, puts the humble spud at the heart of its menu.

If less whimsical eats are your thing, we also have some top-notch gastropubs with menus featuring traditional roast dishes and family-focused eateries where all-you-can-eat salad is the rule.

And we haven’t forgotten fussy eaters either – our list features pubs and restaurants that have expunged most allergens from their menus and others that cater exclusively to vegetarians and vegans.

    Let’s tuck in.

Disclaimer: Our list is in no particular order and all information was correct as of the publishing date.

    1. The Harwood Arms, Fulham

Pub grub doesn’t get much meatier than that on offer at this gastropub in west London. The Harwood Arms is currently the only Michelin-starred pub in London and has won a reputation for the quality of the game and wild meats on its Sunday lunch menu. Mains include sirloin of Belted Galloway, Cumbrian pork belly, slow-cooked deer shoulder and Cornish skate wing.

Much of the meat on the menu is supplied by the pub’s owners, especially the deer and game, while the pub’s roof garden provides the tomatoes, radishes and strawberries that garnish its dishes. The Sunday menu can be found here.

The experience, which launched on 13th October, promises to redefine the traditional Sunday roast by perfecting a crunchy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside potato paired with Sunday lunch staples such as chicken, beef, or roasted cauliflower. The Sunday lunch menu can be found here.

This pub might have foreign origins but you won’t find a more authentically British hostelry serving up no-nonsense Anglo-Saxon pub fare than this boozer in Hampstead. Built in 1585 by a pair of Spanish brothers, the pub is housed in an Grade-II listed building that was once upon a time patronised by the likes of Charles Dickens and John Keats.

The Sunday lunch menu features mouthwatering chicken Milanese, black treacle beef and brisket, all swimming in a rich homemade gravy and all accompanied by puffy Yorkshire puddings, ruffled thyme-roasted potatoes and roasted root veggies. For non-meat-eaters, there’s Portobello mushroom pie, pan-fried sea bass, roasted pumpkin avocado and mango salad on the menu. The Sunday lunch menu can be found here.

Meat eaters can’t go wrong with the Toby Carvery in Mitcham (but you can find the chain all over the UK). Every Sunday, the branch serves up a meat feast of hand-carved cuts including beef, turkey, pork and marmalade-glazed gammon.

It is also an all-you-can-eat deal, so you feel free to replenish your plate if you have room for more after your first fill. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are also available. After all that food the good news is that Mitcham Common is nearby so you can have a postprandial Sunday stroll to walk it off. The menu can be found here.

The restaurant is spread over two floors at its address in Westbourne Grove and is flooded with natural light thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows. Don’t expect to find traditional British Sunday grub on the menu – its epic brunch menu features New York classics, including Don Ruben omelettes, steak and eggs, and Cilbir eggs.

For Sunday lunchers who have allergies, there is no safer bet than Bills in St Martin’s Courtyard. It’s an eatery that’s got honourable mention in a host of restaurant guides – it recently featured in OpenTable’s Top UK 100 Brunches and Sunday Lunches for 2024.

The restaurant doesn’t serve up the traditional roasted Sunday lunch fare you’ll find at many of the other establishments on our list, but it boasts a lengthy brunch menu that leans heavily on towering burgers. All the restaurant’s dishes are broken down by ingredient and possible allergens are listed exhaustively. You can find the menu here.

The Spread Eagle, London’s first fully vegan pub, is a quintessentially British corner pub and a go-to destination for Sunday diners looking to eschew meat-based menus. The emphasis here is on minimal waste and all the food, drink and even the fixtures are plant-based. The kitchen runs a seasonal menu and sources many of the ingredients used in its Sunday dishes from foragers and local producers.

    Final Thoughts

You’ll be hard-pressed to pass a more satisfying Sunday lunchtime than one ensconced in a London restaurant or pub wolfing down roasted lunch.

And while Sundays might be made for lazing, London’s hospitality scene certainly isn’t resting on its laurels.

The Blumenthal-styled wackiness of Potato Time and the growing number of vegan, vegetarian and allergen-aware offerings we’ve listed are just some of the ways the traditional Sunday lunch continues to move with the times in the capital.
